Medical Services Medical services are available to students with or without medical insurance. Medical services include acute care (colds, flu, acne), chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes), first aid, sports physicals, and vision and hearing screenings. A parent permission slip is required to receive services. Medications are dispensed on-site. Prenatal care is available at the Edison site only.
Family Planning Services Reproductive health care (family planning) is available at both high school centers. Pap smears, pregnancy tests, HIV tests, tests for sexually transmitted infections, male exams, and breast exams are provided in a comfortable, private environment. These services are strictly confidential. Birth control is dispensed at both sites. For more information on birth control methods, see Reproductive Health Services.
Mental Health Services The centers at Edison and Stagg are very pleased to offer a variety of counseling services to students. Individual counseling, group counseling, family counseling, support groups, and case management are available to students in need of support. Crisis counseling and substance abuse counseling are also available. Students should never feel they are "alone". There is a caring and supportive team waiting to assist you at your school-based health center.
Stagg Healthy Start has an excellent Peer Counseling and Conflict Mediation Team that gives teens the opportunity to learn and apply counseling skills with teens in conflict or crisis. Contact Stagg Healthy Start if you want more information on this outstanding program.
Support Groups There are a variety of support groups at both Stagg Healthy Start and Edison Health Center. Some groups are based on your culture, while others are centered on an issue such as grief counseling, anger management, or teen parenting. Support groups provide a valuable opportunity for teens to share their experiences and learn that they are not so "alone" in the world. It allows them to see that others are going through the same experiences and situations. For more information on culturally-based support groups, see Education & Community Services.
Other Services There are a variety of programs and services at the school-based health centers. As students' needs change, we adapt our programs to create new services and/or terminate services that are no longer relevant to the student population. Currently, some of the programs we offer in addition to medical, mental health, and support group services are: Nutrition Counseling, Eating Disorders Counseling and Education, Medi-Cal and Healthy Families enrollment, Smoking Cessation Counseling, Nutrition and Physical Fitness Program, Classroom Health Education, Substance Abuse Intervention, Parenting Classes, and the WIC Program.
